History

Firle Lodge was built in 1820, with a second-story addition completed in 1920. The property's three buildings, small orchard, and formal and working gardens arranged along a natural stream, are currently being further restored by its owner, architect Mark Foster Gage.  Gage renamed the property "Firle Lodge" in reference to the historic Firle Place in East Sussex, England, which remains the ancestral seat of the Gage family, dating back to the late 15th century, when Sir John Gage—Mark Foster Gage’s 14th great-grandfather—served as Vice Chamberlin to King Henry VIII.  Two centuries later General Thomas Gage would serve as Commander-in-Chief of British forces in North America during the early American Revolution until 1775. The buildings are in the process of being furnished with a mix of Tudor and Early American decor and antiques chosen to reflect both these property and family histories.
